Racing has long captured the hearts of enthusiasts worldwide, blending adrenaline, precision, and sheer passion. For Rex Abrenilla, it’s a story that began on the streets and has since evolved into the track finishes and prestigious competitions.

From High School Streets to the Drag Strips
Rex’s fascination with racing took root during his high school days. Initially, he found himself drawn to drag racing on the streets, a passion that only grew after obtaining his driver’s license. “Davao was the first place to organize a drag racing event,” Rex recalls. “That’s where it all started for me.”
Expanding Horizons: Autocross and Beyond
After experiencing the thrill of drag racing, Rex ventured into autocross. By 2008, his racing interests had expanded to include drifting, marking a pivotal moment in his career. “Drifting was a whole new challenge,” Rex explains. “It required me to reset everything I’d learned about racing and approach corners with a completely different strategy.”
Joining Toyota Race Team Cebu
In 2023, Rex became part of Toyota Race Team Cebu, stepping into the spotlight of GT racing in Manila. Competing under the Toyota Race Team Cebu brand in events like the GT100 and endurance races, he showcased his skills and determination. “One of my shop partners lent me a car for the GT100, and I’ve been hooked ever since,” he shares.
The Physical and Mental Demands of Racing
Behind the wheel, racing demands peak physical and mental fitness. Rex’s training routine includes daily cardio, strength training, and conditioning. “Consistency is key,” he says. “I aim for at least one hour of cardio every day, paired with strength training to keep my body race-ready.” He also highlights the importance of proper sleep and a balanced diet—though he admits, “No alcohol is a must.”

Preparation and Strategy
Race preparation extends beyond fitness. Rex emphasizes the importance of familiarizing himself with tracks, reviewing telemetry data, and analyzing onboard videos. “Every practice session is an opportunity to refine strategies and improve lap times,” he notes.
On race day, the atmosphere is electric. “Sprint races are intense,” Rex explains, “but endurance races test your stamina and focus over hours of competition.” Rainy conditions or slippery tracks add to the challenge, requiring racers to adapt their techniques in real-time.
Investments and Challenges
The financial demands of racing are significant. “Upgrading a car can cost over a million pesos per year,” Rex reveals. While personal expenses cover vehicle enhancements, event logistics are often supported by sponsors like Toyota. Despite these challenges, Rex views racing as a worthwhile investment, both professionally and personally.
Training in Cebu poses unique hurdles due to the lack of a local race track. “We have to travel to Pampanga or other cities,” he explains. “It’s costly and time-consuming, but it’s necessary to stay competitive.”
Moments of Triumph

Among Rex’s career highlights are his race wins and his latest achievement—finishing third in the Toyota Gazoo Racing Philippine Cup 2024 last November. “Last year, I didn’t expect to place 3rd Overall in the Promotional Class,” he reflects. “It’s moments like those that make all the hard work and sacrifices worth it.”
The Future of Racing
As the racing industry evolves, Rex continues to adapt, balancing innovation with experience. He remains passionate about mentoring aspiring racers and advocating for more accessible racing opportunities in Cebu.
“Racing isn’t just a sport; it’s a discipline that teaches focus, resilience, and teamwork,” he concludes. “For me, it’s more than a dream come true—it’s a way of life.”
Rex’s journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and passion. Whether on the streets, in the pit, or on the podium, his story inspires us to chase our dreams with unrelenting determination.
